How To Keep Area Rug From Slipping: A 4-Way Guideline

Utilize Rug Pads

One of the most popular methods for keeping area rugs from slipping is applying rug pads, as it’s effective and easy to install. Further, if you’re worried about damaging your floor due to additional application, using rug pads is definitely a wise choice.

Generally, manufacturers use PVC, rubber, or felt to produce rug pads. Although rug pads made from rubber work excellently in keeping mats from sliding around, they don’t always provide enough comfort you may expect.

With felt rug pads, your floor will be secure as these rugs provide thick, soundproof, and comfortable layers to walk on. Unfortunately, felt rug pads are not good at grasping, so you may prefer the rubber ones due to their better grip.

Pros

  • The vacuuming and cleaning stages are simple
  • Increase rugs’ soundproofing level
  • Avoid scratches, rug dye damage, and dirt on the floor
  • Enhance the longevity of carpets and floor
  • Have a long-term use

Cons

  • Low-quality or cheap plastic rug pads may damage hardwood floors.
  • Felt rug pads have less grasping ability.

Use Rug Tapes

You can use rug tapes, a double-sided adhesive, to stop your area rug from slipping over places. This application is easy for everyone as it only requires applying one side of the tape to the carpet before sticking it to the floor.

Rug tapes prevent the rug’s edges and corners from folding, which is a common problem if you use a carpet for a long time. They are available in various patterns and dimensions to accommodate different rug categories.

However, rug tape cannot cover and cushion your rug, preserve the floor, or increase your rug’s lifespan. With its affordable price, rug tapes are still widely used to keep area rugs in place. Note that cleaning the floor is compulsory to make the rug tapes stickier.

Pros

  • Safe on different floors, including carpet, hardwood, and tile.
  • Can be reused, moved, and adjusted after several times using
  • Can keep its gripping power
  • Have a reasonable price and come with a set of pieces

Cons

  • Lack of floor’s cushioning
  • Only provide a short-term use

Apply Silicone Caulk

Silicone caulk is a specialized adhesive that you can use on the rug’s underside. Although using silicone caulk for commercial stuff is common, you should not apply it for your households in general due to its strong effect.

If you want to use it to prevent your rug from sliding, ask your home design manufacturer how silicone caulk can act on your floors before attaching anything to them. Moreover, determine the area you want your rug to place because it will be difficult to remove after the glue sets.

Pros

  • Easy to apply
  • Offer super long-term result
  • Reduce slipping by providing appropriate anchoring.

Cons

  • Can leave stains and residue on floors if frequently used
  • Spoil some rug materials.

Utilize Velcro

Velcro, different from grippers, is attached to the upper side of rug anchors. They can adhere to the underside of the rug. To avoid your carpet from slipping, Velcro is most effective when applied to a small area of rugs.

Moreover, this method does not require complex maintenance that is suitable for people who don’t have much time. After applying the Velcro, you need to walk on your rug to provide sufficient pressure, which helps lock this system and strengthen the created bond.

The Velcro system is recommended for those who live in short-time accommodations like dormitories because it won’t last long.

Pros

  • Inexpensive solution
  • Simple application and utilize
  • Allow trimming to fit any rug sizes
  • Waterproof and impervious.

Cons

  • Provide low efficiency for large rugs.

Conclusion

How to keep area rug from slipping? We’ve discussed four basic and efficient methods so that you can find them easy to follow, including utilizing rug pads, rug tapes, silicone caulk, and Velcro.

These solutions are affordable, active, and safe for your rug and the house’s floor. Each application will have different efficiency, longevity, benefits, and drawbacks. You should depend on how your carpet slides to choose the most suitable and effective way to deal with this issue.
