Different Type Of Area Rug Material

Wool

Wool area rugs are the oldest type of rug. Its origin dates back to the BC times when people used hand-knotting techniques. This rug will best suit high-traffic areas such as the living or dining rooms. As it is incredibly soft and not only water and stain-repellent, it can also stretch back and forth easily.

Jute

One of the natural-fiber rugs, jute, is very strong, renewable, and has no chemicals involved. Even though jute rugs are neutral, clean, with no aging, and low maintenance, they tend to be coarse. Their ultimate design is best displayed in living rooms or sunny areas.

Cotton

The most common fabric for area rugs must be cotton because they are so comfortable as well as affordable. Most of them are easy to wash but also easy to fade if put in some sunny places. An entryway, kitchen, or bathroom should be the perfect place for this rug.

Silk

Silk is famous for its shiny texture and smooth appearance. For centuries, it has been an expensive choice for people who want to decorate their walls. Another thing that made up the name for the silk rug is its strength and durability. However, if you don’t want to leave a permanent stain on the carpet, you’d better keep it in bedrooms or low-traffic areas.

Polyester

Polyester rugs have come a long way, and they have a reasonable price for area rugs. Besides, they can offer you various color palettes since they are machine-woven products. Many of them are machine-washable, soft, and cozy, and you can use them most everywhere.

Nylon

Nylon area rugs are well-known in the rug industry due to their characteristics. First of all, the key to this rationale is their durability. Nylon is such a powerful material: anti-abrasion, highly resilient, and elastic. Furthermore, it is available at all price points.

Nylon carpet can fit in any high-traffic area: entryways, dining rooms, or low-traffic area: guest bedroom, bathroom.

Animal Hide

Animal hide or hair-on-hide rugs come in abnormal shapes. The carpet could be full-sized animal hide or just pieces stitched together, which creates a geometric pattern. It is suitable for small areas such as bedrooms, offices, dens, and low-traffic rooms. It is generally easy to clean and can give your space a special look.

Seagrass

The subtle and durable seagrass rug gives an organic, earthy vibe with a touch of natural elegance. This rug will surely compliment any existing décor at your house. Best suited in any high-traffic area.

Different Shapes

Oval

An oval rug is an ideal option for a large hallway or weird-shaped room. The carpet gives off an Americana character. They can go along well with an oval dining table by adding a sense of depth.

Round

If you have a small space and want to make it look bigger, don’t worry. Rounded rugs are the perfect cure. These area rugs can absolutely make your place look and feel more spacious. One more thing, round-shaped rugs should be placed in sitting areas on the floor of the dining room.

Square

Square area rugs can fit in large living areas or the master suite. The elegant symmetry of the square rugs can make the room stand out better. A small note: square rugs look nicer if you pair them with similarly-shaped objects.

Rectangular

The generic shape for most area rugs is a rectangle. And can be used as the main rug in a large room. Rectangular shaped rug often brings a classic, vintage, finesse mood to your space.

Types of Weaving Techniques

Handmade Rugs

There are a lot of techniques in making a handmade rug, such as flat weave, handloom, hand-tufted and hand-knotted. The benefit of having a handmade carpet is that you can have it customized to your preference and the drawback is that they are expensive and time-consuming.

Hand-Knotted Rugs

Hand-knotting is a traditional Persian technique. By making knots, a hand-knotted rug is created. One 8×10 carpet requires about 1 to 6 million knots, taking over 3000 hours for one person and approximately a year to finish.

Hand Tufted Rugs

Tufted rugs start with a pre-woven fabric with small squares. Then, it is hung and stretched tight before the tufting gun does its work. Doing this allows the design to be done more precisely and saves a lot of time because pieces are done separately.

Hand Woven Rugs

Hand-woven rugs are made by interlocking warp and weft, forming a sturdy thin mat without a pile. They are convenient since they have two sides. If one gets dirty, you can flip to the other side. The carpet is made of jacquard and will be available in a few days.

Machine Made Rugs

Machine-made rugs can replicate loomed, tufted and hooked techniques, except for hand-knotted ones. These are more popular with the public because they can be produced massively. Therefore, they are much cheaper. However, the quality of handmade rugs is still leading.

Conclusion

Choosing the ideal rug is not easy; you need to consider area rug materials and shapes, and if you are picky, you also need to look at its weaving technique. And the list keeps moving on and on.

To answer these questions, please list your wishes, read this article and get yourself to the store to look at the fabric if necessary. I hope you can get the rug that fits your space and taste.
